Unfolding Projects: While We Are Waiting
Unfolding Projects: While We Are Waiting (WWAW) is a collective art project between Afghanistan and Australia, prompted by women’s experiences in Afghanistan since the Taliban takeover in 2021. The project involves 16 Afghan women writers and 21 Australian women artists, resulting in 21 Artists’ Books and an Introduction. As a body of work, it documents narratives of this particular period in Afghanistan, and demonstrates relational connections between Afghan women’s writings and Australian women artists’ creative responses to these stories and poems of life under Taliban rule in 2022.
Unfolding Projects is an Australian women artists group that has worked over 14 years in text-image exchanges with women in Afghanistan. Our purpose is for the expression of women’s rights, with Afghan women’s voices and experiences to be heard outside their homeland where they are silenced. The 21 Artists’ Books of WWAW form meeting spaces, where the language of art and writing interact in unique forms of dialogue.
